Interview with Chelsea Kipp, Store Manager of Running Room on Grand

Running Room Grand Old Days

How long have you been with the the
Running Room?

This summer will mark 3 years for me.

What is your history or background?
I started running on Central High School’s cross-country team in my senior year and absolutely loved it.

When I was looking for a job the following summer, Running Room seemed like a great fit. In my time here, I have met so many great people in the running com

munity and been able to be a small part of the beginning of some peoples’ running stories.

Running Room on Grand Turn 10What is the history of the Running Room?
Running Room was founded by John Stanton. He’d been inspired to start running and change his lifestyle after his young sons wanted to run in a 3k race with him. The first store opened in 1984 and was simply a room in a house shared with a hair dressing shop in Edmonton. Now, 32 years later, the company has grown to over 120 locations in Canada and the United States.

History of the Grand Avenue store.
Our Grand Avenue location opened in 2006 and celebrated our 10th anniversary this March!

What is it that you like the most about managing the Grand Avenue Running Room?
I really enjoy the wide range of abilities that we have visit our stores. One minute there might be a runner prepping for the Boston Marathon, and the next moment you are helping someone find their very first pair of running shoes before training for their first 5k.

What are some of the challenges you face?
I think that one of the biggest challenges of trying to get people into running is to minimize the fears they may have; whether those be fears of judgment or failure. But I think that we do a good job of creating a welcoming environment for runners of any ability! Our training programs give participants a chance to work closely with an instructor who can be a great resource to beginner runners and our free run club welcomes newcomers to the group with open arms every time.

What about this business are you the most passionate?
I love seeing the growth of a runner over time! I had a participant in one of my clinics that had trouble with the 5k distance at the beginning of the program and now will be running her first half marathon in June! It’s so rewarding to see all of the work they put in pay off and be part of their journey.

What are you most proud of and why?
I am proud of our run club and the community that that has created. Running Room stores across the United States and Canada host a free run club every Wednesday and Sunday. That tradition has helped runners traveling to the Twin Cities from Canada be able to find a group of like-minded people to run with even when they are away from home.

What do you like about being a member of the Grand Avenue Business Association?
A strong sense of community and a good promoting partnership. We have enjoyed being involved in the Red Flannel Run in association with GABA as well.

The Grand Avenue Business Association would like to congratulate the Running Room for 10 years of business on Grand Avenue and thank then for their support of the 2015 Red Flannel 5K.
